Nature, plants and animals

The Skrylle area offers an exciting mix of habitat types and landscapes. Here you will encounter both younger planted forests and older deciduous forests that have stood for hundreds of years.

Want to experience a real deciduous forest feel? Visit Dalby Söderskog, Prästaskogen or Knivsåsen. In Gryteskog, the peculiar vresboken grows – a beech with gnarled, twisted branches and a characteristic umbrella-shaped crown.

The area is located on the northwestern part of Romeleåsen. The bedrock consists mainly of gneiss and granite, but also quartzite which is mined in the quarry north of Skryllegården. In the eastern part you will find gravel ridges such as Borelundsåsen and Knivsåsen, created during the last ice age.

Northeast of Skryllegården, the area's highest point, Boks backe, rises 123 meters above sea level. Plants that can tolerate nutrient-poor soil thrive here, while lime-loving species such as sedge and yellow sedge thrive in Dalby Söderskog. On the old pasture lands at Måryd and between Dalby and Torna Hällestad, a pasture-like flora blooms with species such as spruce spurge and maidenhair fern.

Skrylle is an area in transition – the spruce forest is gradually being replaced by deciduous forest, where beech and oak are often planted with a protective birch screen. And with a bit of luck during your hike you may spot deer, fallow deer or wild boar.
